MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — Michigan's new firearm safe storage law goes into effect next week and residents in Muskegon County have the opportunity to get free gun locks as part of a community initiative.
The new law, passed in the wake of the Michigan State University shooting, requires that firearms be stored safely where children are, or may be, present.
Trinity Health Muskegon, in collaboration with the Muskegon Police Department, is launching the community initiative to promote safe firearm storage.
"Our partnership with Trinity Health Muskegon reflects our shared commitment to the safety and well-being of our community," stated Chief Tim Kozal, public safety director for the City of Muskegon. "By providing free gun locks and promoting safe storage practices, we aim to empower residents to take proactive steps in preventing firearm-related incidents."
The free gun locks can be delivered to your home, or picked up in person at the Muskegon Police Department.
To apply for a gun lock, visit StoreItSafeMuskegon.com and fill out the form. The website also has instructional videos that show you how to secure your weapons with the gun locks.
The program runs now through March 31, or while supplies last.
“The research underscores the crucial role safe firearm storage plays in safeguarding our children, families, and communities,” said Holly Alway, injury prevention coordinator at Trinity Health Muskegon. “Michigan's safe storage laws prioritize safety and responsibility in every Michigan household. This gun lock delivery program will help ensure a safer community for all residents.”
