MICHIGAN, USA — As summer winds down, COVID cases in the state of Michigan are on the rise. However, numbers don't compare to years past.
Cedar Springs woman Kayl Bitson came down with the virus in June for the second time.
"I woke up one morning and felt like my whole body had been hit by a truck," she told 13 ON YOUR SIDE.
Her symptoms included a fever, stuffy nose, cough and shortness of breath. Since then, her uncle and mom have gotten sick too.
"Everyone around me seems to have had it recently, or has it right now," she added.
The virus has become a hot topic once again this summer after President Joe Biden's diagnosis and Olympian Noah Lyles getting sick before competing.
According to data on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website, reported cases have risen about 50% between the week ending in July 6 and the week ending in August 3.
If you take a broad look at reported cases year over year dating back to 2020, however, cases so far this year do not compare per the MDHHS website.
Bitson said she came down with COVID after going to a concert and the same happened to her uncle.
As we continue to deal with the virus as a part of our everyday lives, she asks we all be mindful of others. She plans to do the same.
"Just protect other people, even if it's a common cold or the flu, nobody wants to get sick"
