KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) K-9 led officers to two stolen vehicle suspects Tuesday.
K-9 Lex, along with other KDPS officers, were dispatched to a home on Collins Street regarding a stolen vehicle. The victim said their vehicle was parked and warming up in the driveway when it was taken.
After being stolen, the vehicle was crashed into a tree across the street and two suspects were seen fleeing the area on foot. A K-9 track was conducted by KDPS officer Lindsey DenHarder and her K-9 Lex.
Police say Lex tracked the suspects to a home on Hays Park Avenue. There, two juveniles were apprehended. They were taken to the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home, where they are now being held on several charges related to the incident.
“In recent weeks, we have seen a spike in the number of vehicles stolen after being left unlocked when warming,” said KDPS Assistant Chief Dave Boysen. “We want this unfortunate incident to be a reminder to all Kalamazoo residents to remain vigilant and make sure your vehicles are locked at all times, including when warming on cold winter days. I also want to remind residents that spare keys should not be left in vehicles as criminals are actively searching unlocked cars for keys.”
