KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Kalamazoo-based West Michigan Air Care (WMAC) will be ending its operations for two West Michigan hospitals at the end of April.
The air ambulance service currently flies for Bronson Healthcare and Ascension Borgess Hospital. However, due to a recent review, a representative of Bronson Healthcare said they are ending operations.
The study showed a continuing decline in flights, a 50% reduction over the last 15 years according to the representative. They also said the "robust" ambulance transportation in southwest Michigan also led to the decision.
The two hospitals released a joint statement on the decision:
"Ascension Borgess and Bronson Healthcare will be maintaining the helipads at our hospitals and will continue to transfer and receive patients via other helicopter services that serve the region to ensure patient care is not disrupted. Plans are in place to work with impacted associates to determine potential opportunities for transitioning to open positions at Ascension Borgess and Bronson Healthcare that match their training and interests."
Operations will officially end on April 20, 2024.
