KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Officials with the City of Kalamazoo are asking residents to stop opening fire hydrants for personal use after an uptick in this was reported.

While soaring temperatures and high humidity may have you tempted to open a fire hydrant on your own, officials say opening and closing hydrants can be dangerous. Not doing so properly can also cause pipe breaks and impact water service to residents in the area.

The following fire hydrants will be opened by city staff during extremely hot weather from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.:

  • Back end of Interfaith (building 1038) far NW corner
  • Burrell and Lawrence
  • Krom and Clay
  • Washington and March
  • Sherwood at Roosevelt Apartments
  • Clarence and Jackson
  • Hays Park and James
  • Charlotte and Sherwood
  • Northway and Princeton
  • Fairbanks and Center
  • Church and Norway

Residents are encouraged to use the free splash pads on Florence Street and at LaCrone Park during hot weather instead of opening unauthorized fire hydrants.

If you see someone using an unauthorized fire hydrant, you're asked to call 269-337-8148 to report it.
