PORTAGE, Mich. — The community is coming together to make sure their neighbors are being cared for, and that driveways and roads can be accessible.
The whirr of chainsaws starting up can be heard across neighborhoods as Portage begins to clean up from Tuesday’s tornado and severe weather.
For many in the community, after the tornado cleared, it was time to put their gloves on and get to work.
The West Portage Little League sprang to action, canceling Wednesday's game to band together a group of helping hands to cut trees, move brush and to assist neighbors in need.
"There's no reason why we can't band together and all be friends and family and all come out to help. So it's really humbling that just a simple Facebook post can bring hundreds of people together, and multiple different neighborhoods," President of West Portage Little League Ben Kirby said.
In another neighborhood, Nathan Casanto says neighbors were making sure his grandfather was safe when the roads were inaccessible.
"We had neighbors that actually checked on him last night when the power was out. So it's been a community on the street trapped in by the storm, helping each other," Nathan Casanto said.
Those helping out said to make sure you're reaching out to neighbors to check-in.
"All of these large trees were covering the road, they were covering our driveway, they were consuming the entire yard, no one could drive through and we couldn't drive," Monica Lee said.
"Immediately all of our neighbors from the neighborhood came in, and all of the kids came and they were chopping and sawing and took care of all of that," Lee said.
On the West Portage Little League Facebook page, you can comment your address, or if a loved one is in need of help clearing debris, the group said they will look to send a crew out as soon as they can.
