KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A new Office of the Public Defender is aiming to expand the criminal defense system for indigent adults in Kent County.

This decision comes after a report by the National Association for Public Defense recommended establishing a new office. Previously, defense for indigent adults was overseen by the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission, before eventually being transferred to individual counties. In Kent County, private attorneys have been utilized for the past six years.

Now, applications are open for a Public Defender to serve as the director of the new office. The Public Defender's responsibilities would include leading the department, overseeing department compliance, providing legal expertise and supervising cases.

Officials hope the Office of the Public Defender will better represent indigent adults, as the team will be more consistent and based in Kent County.

“This is a crucial moment for Kent County as we establish the Office of the Public Defender. Our goal is to standardize representation and increase transparency, ensuring every resident is provided with excellent representation within our legal system,” said Al Vanderberg, Kent County Administrator. “That’s why it is so important to find an exceptional candidate to lead this new office. This person will be essential in shaping our team, creating efficient systems, and enhancing services for our residents.”

Vanderberg said the ideal candidate would be passionate about making a difference in Kent County.

Applications for Public Defender will be accepted until Friday, Aug. 9 at 11:59 p.m. To see the full requirements for the position and submit your application, click here.
