Crews working to clear roads as lake-effect snow continues in West Michigan

Road crews have been working since Thursday night and will continue on state and county roads Friday. Crews will not be getting into neighborhoods at this time.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The Kent County Road Commission is continuing to urge drivers to stay cautious as they hit the road Friday and into the weekend.

According to the road commission, one to three inches of snow has already fallen across West Michigan, with more expected. Areas west of US-131 have seen the bulk of this accumulation so far.

Road crews have been working since Thursday night and will continue on state and county roads Friday. Crews will not be getting into neighborhoods at this time.

Drivers should remember the following tips to stay safe on the roads:

  • Slow Down: Drive slower than usual to give yourself extra time to react.
  • Increase Following Distance: Maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for longer stopping distances. Stay at least 200 feet behind plow trucks.
  • Use Headlights: Turn on your headlights for better visibility, especially during inclement weather.
  • Avoid Distractions: Place your full attention on the road.
  • Keep Your Gas Tank Full: A full tank helps prevent fuel line freeze, provides extra weight for better traction, and helps to keep your car warm if you are stuck/stranded for prolonged periods.
  • Prepare for Emergencies: Carry an emergency kit with items such as blankets, water, snacks, and a flashlight in case you get stranded.
  • Keep Children Far Away from the Road: Make sure children are playing at a safe distance from the road.

If the road looks wet, you should stay aware that black ice may be present, as it's hard to see and often appears as moisture on the road.

The snowy road conditions caused a 15-car pileup that closed part of northbound US-131 overnight. While no serious injuries were reported, some people were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory on Thursday that includes Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Barry, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties. That advisory expires at 7 a.m. Saturday.
