KENT COUNTY, Mich. — An uptick in car thefts in the area has led the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) to remind the public to lock their car doors and take their keys inside with them.
According to the KCSO, during the first two weeks of March there were 10 reports of stolen cars, only one of which was a Kia.
"We did have a trend for a while where it was, you know, certain makes, models like Kias, Hyundai were being most prevalently stolen," said said Kent County Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young. "But I think it's important to understand that there are no vehicles that are immune to it."
The reports came from Ada, Byron, Cascade, Gaines, Grand Rapids and Plainfield townships.
The KCSO said in each case, the cars were parked in driveways, unlocked and had keys left inside the car.
"It's really important that you don't leave your keys inside the car," said Lajoye-Young. "Even if you lock the car, you can't leave your keys inside the car. You need to secure your vehicles and do what you can to help us prevent these car thefts from happening."
She said the cars are being stolen largely overnight, but not always.
