KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The Kent County Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook Tuesday that Undersheriff Chuck Dewitt is retiring after 28 years of service.
"It is bittersweet to see someone go who has brought so much to our agency and community, he will be sorely missed," said Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young. "He has made an impact that will continue in our future generations of KCSO staff."
The Sheriff's Office said Dewitt's career started in 1995 when he was first hired as a Patrol Deputy. He worked his way up the ranks to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chief Deputy before being promoted to Undersheriff in November of 2018.
"It has been an enormous honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Kent County. I will truly miss the relationships I have with our staff. I have learned so much from you over these twenty-eight years," said DeWitt.
During his time of service the Sheriff's Office said DeWitt was key in implementing the Kent County Jail's Medication Assisted Treatment program. The program helps work alongside those struggling with addiction while they are incarcerated.
DeWitt will be continuing a career outside of law enforcement, in a similar capacity where he will be helping those in need.
