GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The trial continues Wednesday for a man who is facing charges in the 2022 shooting death of Mya Kelly.
Keyante Newbern appeared in court Tuesday for the start of his trial. He is accused of shooting and killing 23-year-old Mya Kelly on Dec. 26, 2022, in front of her children.
Omar Dannah, Kelly's boyfriend and the father of her two children, was home with her and the children when the shooting happened shortly before 10 p.m.
He testified on Tuesday that Kelly went to the door after someone knocked, looked through the peephole and heard a voice on the other side. She told Dannah she thought it was her brother playing.
He says she never opened the door before the shooting happened.
"The last word playing was like cut off by shots. Like she barely got 'playing' out," he said.
"Where were your kids when you heard the shots?" the prosecuting attorney asked.
"My daughter was standing right next to her. My daughter walked to the door with her and my son was laying, like laying on the floor and right in front of me," he said.
Newbern is facing the following charges in Kelly's death:
- Homicide - Open Murder
- Carrying Concealed
- Firearm Possession by a Felon
- Felony Firearm
The trial is continuing Wednesday.
