NORTON SHORES, Mich. — A temporary contamination advisory has been issued for Lake Michigan at Lake Harbor Park in Norton Shores.

The City of Norton Shores said the advisory states water conditions may be unsafe due to a high amount of E. coli bacteria in the water.

According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, the affected area is immediately north of the mouth of Mona Lake.

When swimming or doing any water activities, you have a greater risk of contamination.

Children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems are most at risk. You can develop flu-like symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever and dehydration. You're at risk for respiratory illnesses, like ear, nose and throat infections. You can also get a skin infection if you have an open wound.

You can find more information about advisories and beach closures at EGLE's website here.
