20-year-old man charged with murder in Norton Shores crossbow death

The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office issued formal charges against Nyoky Bull who allegedly shot Marcus Olmstead in the chest using a crossbow.

Nyoky Bull, 20, has been charged with murder for the death of Marcus Olmstead.

Bull was arraigned in Muskegon County Court on Friday, Dec. 27.

Olmstead was found dead by his twin brother on his family's driveway in Norton Shores on Wednesday night. The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office issued formal charges against Bull who allegedly shot Olmstead in the chest using a crossbow.

The prosecutor asked 60th District Court Judge Geoffrey Nolan to deny bond due to the nature of the crime. Muskegon County Chief Trial Attorney Matt Roberts said Bull used his girlfriend's phone to message Olmstead on Instagram and arrange a meeting. Roberts said there is evidence that Olmstead and the suspect's girlfriend had corresponded before, and Olmstead believed he was meeting with the girlfriend.

Roberts said there is no indication the girlfriend was involved in the shooting.

Olmstead's mother was present for the arraignment and broke into tears as the judge said her son's name. She said her son, "wouldn't have hurt a fly."

Neighbors described Olmstead and his twin brother as friendly and good kids, not the types to make enemies. A GoFundMe has been set up for the Olmstead family to help pay for funeral expenses.

Bull will be back in court for a probable cause hearing on Jan. 9, 2019.
