GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Maya, a Grand Haven dog that may have eaten marijuana, seems to be completely recovered.
But it was a bad trip for the dog and owner Diane Carlson.
“I was really frightened and scared I was going to lose her,” said Carlson.
Maya, a 6-year-old Weimaraner, became sick on Monday with what her veterinarian thinks was “marijuana toxicity” after a trip to the leash-free dog area of Kirk Park on Lake Michigan.
Carlson says her dog ate something she discovered along the path down to the beach. After playing for over an hour, she says the dog was wobbly, dripping urine and unable to walk properly. She says her veterinarian suspects the Maya ate marijuana.
“He said Maya has classic signs and symptoms of marijuana toxicity,” explains Carlson. “I don’t know if someone dropped it by mistake or if it was embedded in some food source. I put in a really long night wondering if she was going to recover.”
By the next morning Carlson says Maya seemed like she was back to normal. She also says she doesn’t hold Kirk Park responsible or anyone other than herself for not being quick enough to stop the dog from eating whatever made her sick.
She says she is sharing her story to give others information about the potential risk.
“I’m not blaming Ottawa County Parks,” she says. “I’m not blaming Kirk Park. I’m just sharing what happened because it was so devastating to me. It was very scary.”
