Fruitport's Pomona Park larger after land gift

The land was acquired through an anonymous donation.

FRUITPORT, Mich. - The Village of Fruitport acquired nearly three acres of waterfront property on Spring Lake, which has been added to Pomona Park.

The land was acquired through an anonymous donation, and the village got the land from the original owners on June 1. No funds from the village were used to purchase the property.

The vacant waterfront property next to the park has been listed for sale several times, but for one reason or another it never sold.

That is until 18 months ago when an anonymous buyer called the village hall and made an offer to village leaders they couldn't believe.

It lead to last week's closing of the sale.

"He called and basically said I want to buy that for the village to add on to the park," said Amy Haack, Village of Fruitport Councilwoman. "This person at this point doesn't even want any recognition for it."

The village has around 1,100 residents, but people from all over the area use Pomona Park.

Many use it because the park's boat launch gives boaters access to the Grand River and Lake Michigan.

"What we need to do, and what we are excited to do is start a public involvement process," said Haack.

Community members interested in helping shape the future of the space should be watching for public meetings to begin sometime later this summer.

The park offers boating, fishing, picnicking and kayaking. And it's home to the Old Fashioned Days celebration that happens every year on Memorial Day weekend.
