SAND LAKE, Michigan — Several police agencies are searching for a suspect who ran from police early Sunday morning. The search perimeter is centered on the area of 22 Mile and Elm Avenue near Sand Lake, on the Newaygo and Kent County border.

The incident started as a traffic stop near Grant. The suspect took off and led police on a chase across parts of Newaygo County, sometimes at high speeds and through private property.

During the chase, a Newaygo County deputy hit a deer, damaging the cruiser. Eventually the driver left the vehicle and ran off into the woods.

Kent County deputies and Michigan State Police troopers were called in to help with the search. Witnesses posted on social media that they saw drones and K-9 trackers taking part in the search.

A Newaygo County dispatcher said no one was hurt, and police have not indicated there is any threat to the public.

This is a breaking news story that will get updated throughout the day.
