KENTWOOD, Mich. — Calling all West Michigan LEGO fans! The time is nearly here.
The first LEGO store in West Michigan will open inside Woodland Mall in Kentwood on Aug. 16.
The next closest locations are in Chicago or Detroit.
The LEGO Group said there will be immersive experiences offered at the grand opening, including a mystery mural LEGO brick-building activity and displays from the Western Michigan LEGO Users Group.
"The LEGO Store at Woodland Mall will deliver unforgettable immersive experiences with the widest range of LEGO products, hands-on play opportunities for our visitors, exclusive promotions and fun events held in store," said Travis Blue, vice president of Americas and EMEA Brand Retail Stores, the LEGO Group.
Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, a carpenter, LEGO is now in the hands of one of his grandchildren. The name comes from an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt,” meaning “play well."
Today, there are over 900 LEGO stores and amusement parks worldwide and the building bricks have been named "Toy of the Century" twice.
Just as all LEGO store locations, the one in Woodland Mall will sell sets, have areas to play with the bricks freely, towers to build your own minifigs and pick-and-build walls for selecting your own assortment of bricks.
Special promotions are being offered throughout the week of the grand opening, including:
- Aug. 16-18: I <3 LEGO Store Tile giveaway
- Aug. 16: LEGO Store Yellow Truck for all LEGO Insiders with a purchase of $75 or more
- Aug. 17: LEGO Store set with all purchases of $120 or more
- Aug. 18-25: I <3 LEGO Store tote all purchases of $50 or more
