MUSKEGON, Mich. — September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and staff with Hackley Public Library in Muskegon are encouraging Michiganders to get involved with their local libraries.
Library Card Sign-up Month was first implemented in 1987, when Secretary of Education William Bennett said every child should have and use a library card. Now, people are urged to get a library card each September.
Mallory Metzger, marketing and program coordinator at Hackley Public Library, said libraries provide a variety of resources—not just books. This includes things like DVDs, magazines and music, as well as digital resources like audiobooks and e-books.
Many libraries, including Hackley Public Library, also offer discounts to local cultural centers and attractions.
"This just gives you so much access to so many materials, and it saves a ton of money. That's the best thing about it too," Metzger said.
While each library offers different kinds of materials, Metzger said Hackley Public Library has some unique items that can be checked out.
"For Hackley Library cardholders, we also have other items that are kind of like a library of things," she said. "You can check out iPads, Rokus, hotspots...Really, the resources are endless."
If you're looking to get your own library card, Metzger said the process is easy. Just bring an ID or driver's license that has your current address on it to your local library, and staff will get you a card for free.
Children as young as 2 years old can also get their own card with a parent or guardian cosigner.
"It's important for everyone to feel like they can have their own card," Metzger said. "They can check out their materials, enjoy what they get, and just have a great time with it."
Hackley Public Library will be hosting a range of events in September, including crafts for teens, financial presentations, Talk Like a Pirate Day Fest and more. Learn more about Hackley Public Library here.
