DELTON, Mich. — What does it take to go from regular Joe Martinez to one of the most recognizable Detroit Lions fans at every home game?
About 10 to 15 minutes of putting on makeup.
"I'm going to start with the black so it makes it easier to blend the blue in," said Martinez, putting on his blue makeup at his Delton home.
Martinez hasn't always been a Lions fan. He moved to West Michigan in 2017 after living in Chicago. After the move, his love for the Motor City team started to Blossom.
Now, you can find the season ticket holder at Ford Field whenever the team is home dressed in blue face-makeup.
He says it started last year when former Lions safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson put out calls to fans to start showing up to games with blue ski masks to represent the new "Villain Era".
However, Martinez wanted to take it a step further.
"Obviously the outfit changes a little bit due to the season changing, come Christmas time I'll usually be a little more festive, wear Christmas pajamas," said Martinez.
Complete with black accents, Martinez added something new for the Lions in their home game against the Seahawks.
"I wanted to do something different with the dark mode or the Motor City Muscle jerseys," said Martinez.
The Motor City Muscle jerseys are a new style of jersey the team wore for the first time Monday night, trading in their usual Honolulu Blue for a darker look.
For Martinez, the new energy in Detroit, both in the stands and on the field by those like head coach Dan Campbell, has brought his alternate persona alive.
"I was sold on his first press conference, and I'm glad to see that the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan and even honestly the most of America has started to root for the Lions because of Campbell and what he's doing," said Martinez.
