Sun, sand and books | Pere Marquette's 'Little Library' open for 2024 season

Reading on the beach is a simple pleasure for all to enjoy, Friends of Hackley Library made that easier at Pere Marquette.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Reading at the beach is a simple pleasure that many like to enjoy. The sand between your toes, the sound of the waves and a story you can get lost in.

Friends of Hackley Library in Muskegon wanted to make that simple pleasure more accessible at Pere Marquette beach in Muskegon.

"Everybody loves to read a book on the beach when they're laying in the sun and listening to the water," said Scott Majetich.

Majetich and Jill Farkas are members of Friends of Hackley Library and refer to themselves as stewards.

"We spend a lot of time down here at the beach," said Farkas. "I thought it would be cool to have a little library here at the beach."

And so Farkas pitched the idea to Friends of Hackley Library and it was soon installed. She explained that a friend of theirs helped to build the library and other friend helped out by painting it.

"It's a community effort," said Farkas.

A community effort that continues even after the installation of the library. Some visitors to Pere Marquette leave the beach taking home more than just the sand that inevitably ends up in their cars.

"The point of a little library is that you take one, leave one," said Farkas. "But that doesn't always happen. Especially when you come to the beach, little kids don't bring a book."

Farkas explained that they had just filled the library Sunday morning and it was already almost empty by Monday afternoon.

"And it's not even beach season," said Majetich.

"So we do need help filling it," added Farkas.
