The Lowell Area Fire Department honored one of its own, after former, long-time fire chief, Frank Martin announced his retirement earlier this year.
Martin retired back in January after 45 years of service to the department. He joined the fire department as a volunteer in 1971 before being promoted to chief in 1988.
He said he plans to spend his time now with his family and travel in order to catch up on the moments he missed, but he keeps his radio handy to keep an ear on his guys at the station
"Make sure everybody gets home safe, you know the fireman--come do the fire, I've always had people that respond to the calls--they all go home safe to their families and hopefully that continues. They're smart, they've done their training they'll be in good hands," Martin said.
The city held an open house in Martin's honor Wednesday evening, at the Look Memorial Fire Station on Hudson Street in Lowell.
