Steps taken to fix Lowell biodigester after complaints

All of the floors on the facility were cleaned with a bleach solution, an odor neutralizer was added to outside tanks and a new drum filter was ordered.

An update Wednesday on efforts in Lowell to address the smell coming from a biodigester.

The facility turns organic waste into energy that is then sold to the Lowell Light in Power. The problem is, the facility has been releasing a smell similar to rotting garbage.

City leaders and the facility operator met with residents last week and promised to make changes.

As of this week, all of the floors on the facility were cleaned with a bleach solution, an odor neutralizer was added to outside tanks and a new drum filter was ordered.

When the project was approved in 2012, city leaders traveled to a similar facility in Germany. They assured residents living nearby it would not cause an odor.
