LUDINGTON, Mich. — USA Today's 10Best has released a list of New Year's Eve "drops" that are nominated as some of the best. Readers will be able to go and vote for whichever one they feel is best of the 20 that were nominated.
Among the nominations is Ludington's annual ball drop. The drop in Ludington has been a tradition for 15 years this year and it's one of the largest in West Michigan.
“As one of our highest attended annual events, the Pure Ludington New Year’s Eve Ball Drop is a favorite holiday tradition – and one of the biggest ball drops in West Michigan,” said Brandy Miller, executive director of the Ludington Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We ask our locals and visitors alike to support Ludington with your vote, in addition to making plans to celebrate with us New Year’s Eve!”
Miller said that Ludington is mostly a summer destination, so being able to host an event that brings in a crowd does a lot for the community.
"We see anywhere between five and ten-thousand people fill our downtown just to stand shoulder to shoulder to mark the New Year," she said.
The Ludington ball drop is up against some wacky drops across the country. Competitors include the "Blue Crab Drop" in Maryland, "The Possum Drop" in Georgia and "The Great Pinecone Drop" in Arizona.
Voting for the competition began Nov. 11 and ends on Dec. 9. The Ludington Area Visitors Bureau encourages people to vote for the Ludington drop daily throughout the competition.
