WIXOM, Mich. (WZZM) -- West Michigan is home to three dozen disc golf courses where players are throwing discs made right here in Michigan.

One man's love for throwing discs has become a part of a Wixom-based company called Discraft, which makes discs sold around the world.

Vice president Mike Wagner says the company prides itself on doing everything in house, from designing to molding, decorating, and shipping.

Discraft manufactures discs for two rapidly growing sports, one of which is ultimate frisbee, a team sport similar to football and soccer.

"We make the official championship disc for USA Ultimate, which is the governing body for 'ultimate' (disc golf)," said Wagner.

According to DIscraft, for a match to be considered official it must be played with the 'Ultra Star' made by Discraft. While ultimate discs are a standard weight and size; discs played in a common disc golf game come in a variety of weights and shapes.

Wagner says his uncle, Jim Kenner decided to start the company in 1979 because he was disappointed in the quality of the discs used in both sports.

"We ship to Japan, Australia, Europe, Mexico, Canada, everywhere," said Wagner.

The Discraft warehouse has 250,000 discs ready to ship and refill the shelves when they're empty.
