LANSING, Mich. — A prisoner has been charged for allegedly threatening to bomb Governor Gretchen Whitmer's home, Attorney General Dana Nessel's office announced Thursday.
Jihaad Ahmad, 36, is currently in custody in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
He was arraigned on Monday in Lansing's 54-A District Court on one count of false report or threat of terrorism. Nessel said he's being charged for allegedly threatening Whitmer.
The State alleges that in response to being denied parole, Ahmad send a letter to Whitmer's office in May 2024. In the letter, he threatened Whitmer's life and to bomb her home when he was released from prison.
Michigan State Police was given the letter for investigation.
“Violence and violent rhetoric directed at elected officials pose significant threats to not only them but our democracy as a whole,” Nessel said. “My department is committed to prosecuting this offense to the fullest extent of the law.”
The charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine.
Ahmad will next appear in 54-A District on Nov. 14.
