MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — The man charged with shooting and killing a Norton Shores teen two years ago has taken a plea.
Kevin Wilson, of Fruitport, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and a felony firearm charge on Friday.
He was charged in December 2021 after 18-year-old Dylan Owens, an expectant father from Norton Shores, was shot and killed in Pomona Park on Dec. 9.
"Every day, you know, we just miss him and every day, we realize what a loss it was and every day we cry," Dylan's mother Jen Owens said following the plea hearing. "Every day, you know, I'm watching my sons' lives being torn apart missing their brother."
Cheyenne Edwards, Owens' girlfriend, testified back in 2022 that Owens and Wilson arranged by texting to meet at the park to fight.
"When people say fight I would think with their hands, not with a gun," said Edwards.
Edwards, Owens and Dominic Colegrove II, who also testified in court, went to the park together on Dec. 9, 2021.
Edwards said when they arrived, Wilson was already parked in a car and in the backseat. She said Owens approached the vehicle but Wilson and his brother, who was also in the car, refused to exit their vehicle.
Owens then kicked in one of the car's taillights, according to Edwards.
Both Edwards and Colegrove told the judge Owens was shot while Wilson was still in the car, or leaning out the rear passenger side door.
"(Dylan) didn't even touch him," said Edwards. "It wasn't one shot, it was five shots."
A Fruitport Township police officer said Wilson is the one who reported the shooting to 911, saying that he'd been shot at and returned fire. Investigation showed all the shell casings recovered from the scene matched the gun recovered from Wilson.
Wilson will be sentenced in July.
