KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A man is in custody after physically assaulting a Grand Rapids Township fire lieutenant on Saturday, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO).
KCSO said just before 4 p.m., deputies were called by a lieutenant with the Grand Rapids Township Fire Department asking for help at their fire station located at 1836 East Beltline Avenue.
According to KCSO, the lieutenant told them there was a 40-year-old Cedar Springs man there who was suicidal.
As deputies were driving to the fire station, the fire lieutenant requested an emergency response from them.
KCSO said the preliminary investigation showed that the lieutenant was working alone at the fire station and let the man into the garage because he thought the man was there to work on the concrete.
Deputies said it was learned that the man was suicidal, had consumed illicit drugs and had a firearm. The man then began to physically assault the lieutenant.
When KCSO arrived at the fire station, deputies said they saw the man actively assaulting the lieutenant. They physically restrained the man and arrested him.
Deputies said the lieutenant has several injuries and is being treated at a local hospital.
The Cedar Springs man is being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility. KCSO said it's anticipated the Kent County Prosecutor's Office will review the case.
