Mecosta County Sheriff: Man dead after he fell through the ice while fishing

The family of the 59-year-old man wasn't able to reach him in the water. First responders couldn't revive him.

MECOSTA COUNTY, Mich. — An ice fisherman lost his life after falling into the water Monday evening in Mecosta County. 

The sheriff's office said it happened just after 9 p.m. when the family called 911 to ask for help rescuing the 59-year-old in the water. 

Authorities said the family found the man was ice fishing and couldn't get him out of the water when he fell in. 

When first responders made it to the scene, they got the man out but he wasn't breathing. 

Despite life-saving measures, he didn't make it. 

Deputies were assisted by Barryton Fire, Fork Township Rescue, Chippewa Township Fire/Rescue, Morton Township Fire/Rescue with hovercraft, Nottawa Shermon Township fire/Rescue with airboat, Mecosta County EMS, Mecosta County Sheriff Office Dive Team, Medical Examiner's Office and Meceola Central Dispatch. 

Mecosta County Sheriff Brian Miller is sharing a warning with other sportsmen to stay off the ice. Due to warmer temperatures, the ice is not stable.
