VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A man is dead after being hit by a car while walking in Antwerp Township early Sunday morning, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said around 4:20 a.m. they were called to County Road 657 near Two Oaks Circle for a report of a car hitting a pedestrian.

According to VBCSO, the initial investigation shows that a 78-year-old man from Lawton was walking in the road when he was hit by a northbound car.

Deputies said the man wasn't wearing any reflective clothing and appeared to have been "well into the travel lane" when he was hit.

The man died on the scene from his injuries, deputies said.

The driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing, according to deputies.

County Road 657 was closed between 62nd Avenue and Drape Road for about 4 hours while deputies investigated the crash.

The road is now back open to traffic.
