MUSKEGON, Mich. — A man is dead after officers shot him in a standoff, Muskegon Police say.
It happened early Wednesday morning near Howden Street and East Holbrook Avenue.
Officers arrived around 4:06 a.m. to discover a man acting erratically and holding a knife. Police say he was not compliant with their orders.
The 20-year-old man allegedly ran to a neighboring home and attacked a woman with the knife. Police then shot the suspect, and he died on the scene.
The woman suffered multiple injuries and was sent to the hospital. She's expected to survive.
The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, as per policy. The name of the man is not being released at this time.
Neighbor John Jones said he watched the ordeal.
"The officers asked him to come out several times, and he didn't respond. They kept it up, and finally, it happened," Jones said. "He came out with a knife. He was coming down the street. They told him to drop the knife several times. He wasn't doing it."
Jones said he heard officers tell the man to put down the knife numerous times, and felt the officers did their jobs during the altercation.
"The next minute you know, all hell broke loose... It was a shame. A young kid like that. It happened too quick," Jones said.
