HOLLAND, Michigan — A man was arrested after a domestic assault situation turned into a police chase and ended in a crash, the Holland Department of Public Safety said.
Police came to a townhome in the Meadow Lanes complex on Ramblewood Court on Saturday just before 9:30 p.m., officers say. There, a 40-year-old Holland woman told police her boyfriend, a 31-year-old Holland man, assaulted her.
Officers found his car parked on Cabill Drive, off M-40. When police tried to approach the man, he drove off. He turned onto West I-196 as officers followed, police said.
The suspect used an "authorized vehicle only" turn lane to turn onto eastbound I-196, but began driving the wrong way. Police stopped the pursuit for the safety of other drivers.
Allegan County deputies later found the car driving back to Holland on I-196. They again tried to stop him, but he drove off.
The man returned to the Meadow Lane townhome, where Holland officers were still on scene. He drove into the side of the townhouse, but the concrete steps leading to the door stopped the car before too much damage was done, officers said.
The man was arrested and taken to the hospital for apparent injuries. He was held on charges of domestic assault and operating while intoxicated.
The woman who called police was treated for minor injuries.
The suspect’s name is being withheld pending arraignment.
