Sheriff: Driver in southwest Michigan fails to see group of children on bikes, fatally strikes 10-year-old

The driver, a 29-year-old from Vicksburg, is facing felony charges. A 10-year-old who was heading to school died at the scene.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Mich — A child is dead after a driver didn't see multiple school-aged children in St. Joseph County, the Sheriff's Office says.

Deputies responded to the area of Banker and Balk Road in Sherman Township around 8:07 a.m. Monday on a report of a vehicle hitting multiple kids.

Investigators say a group of four kids were riding their bikes westbound in the street, heading to the Amish school in the area. A 29-year-old man from Vicksburg in a pickup truck was also heading west on Banker Street.

The driver, who police say worked in the area, didn't see the children and hit one of them.

First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but a 10-year-old child died at the scene.

The driver, Logan Keith Thomas, was arrested and is lodged at the Sheriff's Office on a felony charge.

He was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on operating a motor vehicle while his license is denied or revoked causing death, operating a vehicle without security and being a habitual offender 4th offense.

The judge set his bond at $100,000.
