KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A suspect was bitten by a K-9 after fleeing police in Kalamazoo on Saturday, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said around 6:50 p.m. they were sent to Belle Tire at 5790 Gull Road after Kalamazoo County Consolidated Dispatch received information that a stolen vehicle was there.
Deputies arrived at the Belle Tire and found a male suspect outside of the car. They said they gave him verbal commands which he ignored, getting into the stolen car and driving away.
The suspect led deputies on a 10-minute chase ending at Burrell Avenue near Florence Street in Kalamazoo. Deputies said he stopped the car, got out and ran.
A K-9 Team said they gave the suspect a command to stop or a K-9 would be deployed. Deputies said the suspect continued to run and the K-9 was sent to apprehend him.
The K-9 caught and bit the suspect, who deputies said continued to resist as they attempted to take him into custody. They said they placed him in handcuffs shortly after.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and will be lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on several felony charges, deputies said.
There were no other injuries in the incident.
Anyone who may have further information is asked to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 383-8748 or Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100.
