VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — Fire crews rescued a man from his burning bed in his Antwerp Township home early Tuesday morning.

The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office (VBCSO) said around 2:30 a.m. a man called 911 and said his bed was on fire but he couldn't get out of it and into his wheelchair. Crews were sent to his home in the 50000 block of 29 1/2 Street, deputies said.

VBCSO said a Van Buren County sergeant was the first to arrive at the scene and had to kick in the man's door to get into the house.

The home was filled with smoke but he was able to get to the back of it where the man was still in his smoldering bed. The sergeant carried him through the home and out the entrance, VBCSO said.

Shortly after they made it out of the home, deputies said it became fully engulfed in flames.

The man had burns on his legs and feet and suffered from smoke inhalation. He was taken to a local hospital and deputies said they don't know his current condition.

The sergeant was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but first responders believe it started in the bed, based on their initial observations.
