BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Michigan State Police (MSP) shared Wednesday that a man was hospitalized after being shot by a MSP member in Battle Creek.

MSP posted to X that a staff member and a Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety Officer were on a traffic stop around 1:30 p.m. in the 1300 Block of Monroe.

MSP said the driver was previously stopped for a Federal parole warrant for absconding.

The driver refused to exit the vehicle and abruptly backed up, turning the vehicles wheels at the same time. The vehicle hit and injured the Benton Harbor officer's leg. To stop the driver from further injuring the officer's leg, the MSP member shot at the driver, hitting him twice.

The driver and the injured officer were brought to a nearby hospital. The suspect has since been arrested and the officer is still in the hospital.

The MSP 6th District Investigative Response Team is leading the investigation into the incident. The MSP member who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave as is policy pending the outcome of the investigation.
