IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A man who placed a trooper in a headlock and hit him in the face has been taken into custody.

According to deputies, on Feb. 6, a trooper from the Lakeview Post was trying to talk to a man while he was walking on the roadway wearing all dark clothing at night.

The man then ran from the trooper and started to resist him after a short chase on foot, troopers said.

The suspect, 22-year-old Nathaniel Guy Peiffer of Ionia, continued to resist arrest and hit the deputy in the face, then placed him in a headlock, according to troopers.

Peiffer was taken into custody with the help of the Ionia County Sheriff's Office and the Ionia Department of Public Safety.

Both the trooper and Peiffer were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

According to deputies, Peiffer has a lengthy criminal history.

Troopers said he's being held at the Ionia County Jail on four counts of resisting and obstructing, possession of methamphetamine, resisting and obstructing causing an injury and assault by strangulation.
