Michigan has successfully legalized recreational marijuana. The state is now 10th in the nation and first in the Midwest to do so.
However, the new law has not stopped communities across the state from creating prohibitions on recreational and medical marijuana businesses.
Since Proposal 1's passing, municipalities and townships have been deciding if marijuana businesses will be allowed within their jurisdictions.
A number of communities have allowed the businesses, and are also working to boot the vast majority of misdemeanor pot cases currently on the desk's of county prosecutors -- however, many communities have opted out allowing the businesses to exist within their borders.
LARA's communication manager, David Harn, noted that communities are not required to let them know they are opting out of allowing the businesses under Prop 1, but that LARA officials requested communities do. This is not an official list, these are just the communities who have contacted LARA to opt of the business side of Prop 1, Harn said.
Some communities not listed here include Wyoming, Spring Lake, Grand Haven and Hudsonville. Crockery Township was on the fence about whether they were going to ban recreational marijuana businesses or not.
