Freezer failure causes food spoilage, Meals on Wheels deliveries canceled until Thursday

While they don't yet know what caused the freezer failure, they had to throw out all of their frozen food since it was at room temperature for too long and spoiled.

Editors Note: When originally published, this article included a video with footage of the Meals on Wheels Western Michigan (MOWWM) headquarters. MOWWM serves Kent and Allegan counties and was not affected by the freezer malfunction.

AgeWell Services of West Michigan shared to Facebook Tuesday that their freezer experienced an equipment failure over the weekend.

While they don't yet know what caused the failure, they had to throw out all of their frozen food since it was at room temperature for too long and spoiled.

The post read: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will not be delivering Meals on Wheels in Muskegon, Oceana, and Ottawa counties today and tomorrow (Tuesday, December 26 and Wednesday, December 27)."

They shared that insurance should cover most of the food spoilage, but they would still have to pay a deductible and will have to pay for equipment repairs.

They also said they prepare for these kinds of emergencies and that all program participants receive shelf-stable emergency meals during times they can't deliver.

An update to their post on Tuesday read: "We have robust emergency plans in place to ensure our neighbors are safe and have food. This morning, we already have plans for meal service to resume on Thursday with an altered menu."

All service cancellations can be found here.
