The Grand Rapids Griffins and Safe Kids Greater Grand Rapids are teaming up to equip 200 kids with free bicycle helmets.

The Griffins have held their "Put A Lid On It" bike helmet safety program for 14 years and this will be the 10th year that event takes place at local libraries.

"Lids at the Library" will happen over two days. On Wednesday, June 28 kids at the Kent District Library's Krause Memorial Branch at 140 E. Bridge Street NE in Rockford will get helmets. The next day the event will happen at the Grand Rapids Public Library's Madison Square Branch at 1201 Madison Avenue SE.

Both events start at 2 p.m. and each will provide helmets to the first 100 kids between ages 1 and 12 accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Kids 17 and younger who visit the Griffins website can also sign a pledge to always wear a helmet while riding. Taking that pledge will earn them a voucher for two free tickets to a 2017-18 Griffins game. They'll also be registered for a chance to win a new bike.
