LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is offering drivers money to complete a survey about road usage charges.
MDOT says they are studying possible changes to infrastructure funding as the country moves away from gas-powered vehicles.
Right now, about half of the state's gas tax goes to infrastructure like roads, bridges and public transit. But as more electric vehicles hit the road, the revenue from the state's gas tax is estimated to continually fall.
"This study explores road usage charges, which means that instead of paying state fuel taxes, you would pay a few cents for each mile you drive," MDOT wrote about the survey.
To be eligible to take the survey, you must be a Michigan resident and be at least 18 years old.
The survey takes an estimated 10-15 minutes to complete and you will receive a $10 gift certificate upon completion.
And then in the fall of 2024, qualifying survey respondents will be offered an opportunity to participate in a pilot demonstration. If you participate you will be eligible for additional incentives ranging from $75 to $500.
You can learn more about the survey here.
The MDOT survey is funded from a grant provided by the Federal Surface Transportation System Funding Alternatives program.
