GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is giving away thousands of gun locks to encourage Michiganders to safely store their firearms. Law enforcement is also offering free gun locks with no questions asked.
The cable-style locks that will be given away were purchased as part of the Michigan State Police (MSP) budget. There are 75,000 that will be distributed for free while supplies last.
Michiganders should also be reminded that residents are required to store their firearms safely when a minor is in the home or could reasonably visit.
“Feeling safe and secure is something every child and every individual in Michigan deserves. Gun locks save lives,” said Col. James F. Grady II, MSP director. “If you have a firearm in your home, store it properly, away from minors – it’s the law.”
“Our department is committed to improving the safety and well-being of Michigan children. We are offering these gun locks to keep children and their families safe from firearm violence,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. “We are pleased that many residents have already stopped in at one of our local offices to get their free gun lock and encourage others to do the same as we work together to promote firearm safety.”
If you need a gun lock, you should visit your county MDHHS branch, contact your local health department or stop by an MSP post or local police department to receive one.
