One mom in Grandville is helping to make sure her neighbors don’t go hungry just by offering some of her leftovers when she can.
Chelsea Petersen and her fiancé have a blended family with four children. So, they’re used to cooking a lot of food but often have food left over. One night she decided to pack up those leftovers and post them to a Facebook group with nearly 100-thousand members offering free and unwanted items in West Michigan.
Petersen says at first, she was nervous about how people might respond.
“The likes, comments were just so overwhelming and that’s when I realized that there was such a need in the community for help, I mean, there’s people like right down the road that are starving and we’re throwing away leftovers every night and you don’t think about it but in the last two months, I’ve given away 140 meals,” she said.
Petersen says she doesn’t do this every day, just anytime she has leftovers.
Sometimes she’ll even include some snacks or something sweet.
She uses all brand-new to-go containers. In fact, she says a couple ladies noticed her posts on Facebook and donated multiple sets of 50 to-go containers.
Petersen is encouraging others to do the same by sharing your leftovers rather than just throwing them away.
