DUNDEE, Mich. — Right place at the right time.
That's what the Dundee Police Department said about a truck driver making a delivery for Hungry Howies Tuesday morning.
Jonathon Garza from Clinton Township was at the Cabela's and heard a boy screaming for help. He saw the 12-year-old in the middle of an icy pond who had fallen through and was struggling to stay afloat in the 20-foot water.
He immediately called 911 for help, and emergency crews made it to the pond within 2 minutes.
Officer Joe Schumaker grabbed a floating device and made his way to the boy, eventually falling through the ice himself.
He kept going, and waded out to the child.
Then some other officers, deputies and firefighters helped pull them back to shore safely.
Medical crews took the boy to a nearby hospital to get checked out. Officer Garza returned to duty later that day.
"The Dundee Police would also like to recognize the 911 caller, Jonathon Garza from Clinton Township. He heard the boy screaming for help and called 911. He was in the right place at the right time," the police department said.
