COLDWATER, Mich — The Michigan State Police (MSP) has placed a member of their Emergency Support Team (ES Team) on administrative leave following the fatal shooting of a suspect.
The shooting happened after 8 p.m. on Monday, March 18 in Coldwater. The Coldwater Police Department asked MSP and their ES Team to serve a multi-count felony warrant arrest at a home on Lucky Drive in Coldwater.
The suspect was 32-year-old Richard Wilkinson, who was accused of home invasion.
When MSP and the ES Team arrived on the scene, MSP says they were confronted by Wilkinson carrying an AR-style rifle.
MSP says that a member of the ES Team fired multiple shots at Wilkinson, killing him.
The trooper who shot Wilkinson is now on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
MSP will normally carry out officer-involved shooting investigations for local law enforcement departments, but since an MSP trooper was involved, the shooting will be investigated by the First District Investigative Response Team detectives.
The crime scene is being processed by MSP Lansing Lab and an autopsy will be completed at Corewell Health.
The findings from the investigation will be submitted to the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review.
MSP is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
