Michigan Supreme Court appoints new Chief Judge of 61st District Court

In the role, Angela T. Ross will serve a two-year term and be the presiding officer of the court.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Judge Angela T. Ross has been appointed as Chief Judge of the 61st District Court by the Michigan Supreme Court beginning on Jan. 1, 2024. 

Ross was appointed to the bench by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in March 2022. 

Before her appointment, Ross was director of enforcement in Grand Rapids in the criminal enforcement division. She prosecuted criminal ordinance violations as well as managed housing, zoning and tax code violations. 

During her time as an attorney, Ross practiced family, criminal and business law. 

Currently, Ross is the president of the Floyd Skinner Bar Association, a trustee of the Grand Rapids Bar Association and the chair of the Grand Rapids Bar Minority Clerkship Committee. 

She earned her Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University College of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Michigan.

"This court is an instrumental part of the justice system, and we will be dedicated to making sure people are heard, respected, and valued while providing fair and efficient access to justice for all," Ross said. 

In the role, Ross will serve a two-year term and be the presiding officer of the court.
