NEW BUFFALO, Mich. — Eleven people were injured Thursday night when an Amtrak train hit an empty vehicle and derailed near New Buffalo in Berrien County.
Amtrak officials say the train was traveling from Pontiac to Chicago and hit the vehicle, which had been sitting on the tracks, around 10 p.m. The Berrien County Sheriff's Office said a tow truck was working to remove the vehicle when the incident happened.
There were about 218 passengers onboard. The sheriff's office said the engineer and 10 passengers were minorly injured and treated at the scene.
While the train derailed, officials say it remained upright.
School buses were used to take passengers to New Buffalo High School, which acted as a temporary shelter. Deputies say many passengers were picked up by loved ones at the high school.
The remaining passengers were taken to the Amtrak station in Chicago around 12:40 a.m. Friday.
This incident remains under investigation.
