ROSCOMMON COUNTY, Mich. — A 68-year-old Freeland man is dead after a crash involving two pontoon boats on Independence Day.

The Roscommon Sheriff's Office said the two-boat crash happened on Houghton Lake in the Long Point area of Lake Township on Thursday, July 4.

When first responders made it to the area, bystanders were already doing CPR on one victim. More victims got off the lake, and two additional victims were taken to an area hospital for their injuries.

Authorities identified the deceased as David Dark.

Investigators believe a pontoon boat was headed east with four people on board as a second pontoon headed west had 12 people aboard. They collided.

Detectives believe a third boat was also traveling close by and may have obstructed the view of the boat's drivers.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's family and friends at this time," Undersheriff Ben Lowe said.
