MANISTEE, Mich. — A 53-year-old fisherman is dead from an apparent drowning Tuesday the Manistee County Sheriff's Office said.
The man, identified as Todd Marshall of Interlochen, was fishing the Manistee River just downstream of the Hodenpyl Dam around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Witnesses told deputies the man fell into the water and started to struggle before he went under.
The sheriff's office sent out crews to search for him, along with crews from Dickson Township Fire Department, and the Michigan DNR law enforcement division as well as a drone from the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety.
A Michigan DNR law enforcement boat found the victim in the water. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
"We would like to remind the public of the importance of wearing a life jacket when engaged in any type of water activity," Sheriff Brian Gutowski said.
The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety, the Michigan DNR Law Enforcement Division, the Michigan State Police, the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Maple Grove Township Fire Department, Dickson Township Fire Department, Onekama Township Fire Department, MMR EMS, and Manistee County Central Dispatch.
