Deputy uninjured after firework launched at his chest in Ingham County

Deputies were investigating a large party when a car sped away, and one of the occupants allegedly shot a firework at them.

INGHAM COUNTY, Mich. — An Ingham County deputy was uninjured after a teen allegedly shot a firework at the deputy's chest.

Deputies say the incident happened just after midnight Wednesday when they had been responding to reports of a party and teens shooting off fireworks in the 5000 block of Hemlock Drive in Delhi Township.

When deputies arrived, they found a large party happening. A car sped away from the scene as deputies approached on foot, and one of the occupants allegedly shot a firework at one of them.

The firework bounced off the deputy's chest and exploded. The deputy was uninjured.

Detectives were able to locate the vehicle and some of the suspects involved in this incident.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office is using this incident to remind Michiganders about firework safety.

"We share this unfortunate and reckless event as a reminder to the community of the responsibility and dangers associated with fireworks of all kinds," reads a post on the department's Facebook page. "Anything that burns, sparks and explodes comes with risk. Please take extra time to educate the young and give concerted attention to the who, how, where and when, if handling fireworks."

No one was injured. This incident is still under investigation.
