LANSING - Governor Snyder signed a bill Thursday, April 5, supported by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission which allows certain private clubs to serve alcohol to national members of their organizations.
Previously, only local members of local private clubs were allowed to purchase alcohol on their premises. MLCC Chairman Andy Deloney explained it as "until this law takes effect, state law requires out-of-town veterans to rely on others to purchase them a beer while visiting a veteran’s club during their travels.”
The private clubs in general fall into either veterans organizations with national or congressionally chartered organizations, or clubs which are local units of fraternal nonprofits with 501(c) designations. Examples include the VFW, Elks and Moose clubs.
The new law will go into effect on July 4.
